Erickson would spent time to listen and truly understand the client and his/her needs and then adapt his technique accordingly. Thus, flexibility is a big part of this type of hypnosis. In addition, Ericksonian Hypnosis is more indirect or conversational, which is more ''gentle'' approach towards the unconscious. At times our conscious resistance is very strong, so by utilizing indirect suggestions we help the subconscious mind without the conscious mind being on guard. Another important aspect of this type of hypnosis is the freedom that the client has to interpret what is being said in his/her own way. Nothing is imposed, rather, the hypnotist is responsible for finding ways to understand the client's way of thinking/point of view.
